The Bolwig's organ in more than 25% embryos is either misplaced or misshapen. In a subset of these embryos a few photoreceptors appear to have separated from the major cluster and migrated to the correct location. Bolwig's nerve also exhibits defects: bifurcations or nodules. The nerve appears to reach the brain normally in most embryos.
