FlyBase curator comment: this entry is used to capture phenotypic information when the particular allele (or allele combination) used by the author could not be determined but the context of the experiment suggests that the phenotype being described is some kind of loss of function.
The DNA is more dispersed than normal or fragmented in mutant oocytes, indicating a defect in karyosome formation. The oocyte is found in the middle of the egg chamber in a small number of cases. Fusion of egg chambers is sometimes seen, resulting in egg chambers with 30 nurse cells and two oocytes. Many egg chambers undergo degeneration in the mutant females.
Condensation of DNA in the oocyte nucleus to form the karyosome is abnormal in homozygous egg chambers. In some cases the DNA is more diffuse than normal or it is threadlike and fragmented.
