Third instar male larvae do not have puffy X chromosomes when reared at 18oC. Heterozygous females occasionally (less than 5%) show transformation of sexual characteristics such as transformed genitalia and sex combs on the prothoracic leg. Males are viable and sexually dimorphic characters are unaffected (with the exception of one male where the orientation of the sex comb was altered).
Revertant; the puffy X chromosome phenotype of pfyBM2 has been reverted. It is not known whether the structural alteration of the X chromosome and the sexual transformation seen in the "BM2=1.36" strain are due to a perturbation in the same gene or not - the "BM2=1.36" strain may therefore contain two separate mutations - a reversion of pfyBM2 (structural alteration of the X chromosome phenotype) and a separate mutation causing the sexual transformation.
No visible deletions are detected at the 16A region.
