      Eye colour: homozygotes have reduced red eye pigmentation. Homozygotes show adenine auxotrophy. Homozygous females respond positively to supplementation of the medium with adenine, adenosine or RNA and do not respond to supplementation with cytidine, guanine, uridine or hypoxanthine.

      ade53 fails to complement ade41 for adenine auxotrophy (in contrast to other ade5 alleles). It is not known whether ade53 is a double mutant or deficiency that affects two separate genes (ade4 and ade5) or whether ade4 and ade5 are actually a single gene and intragenic complementation is occurring between ade41 and other ade5 alleles.
