Homozygotes hatch normally, but many die during larval and pupal stages. A small proportion survive to adulthood. Embryos have gonadal coalescence defects. Gonads are seen, but are consistently smaller than wild-type. These gonads appear to be populated by germ cells, but a proportion of the germ cells remain scattered. In adult escapers, males exhibit testicular reduction, although other parts of the reproductive apparatus, (derived from the genital imaginal disc rather than the gonad) are present. Females exhibit strong ovarian reduction. Homozygous adult escapers do not exhibit gross muscle defects, however they have bloated abdomens, owing to a hugely distended crop.
