Expression of fkhhs.PJ results in the retention of salivary glands at 20APF, approximately 6 hours after the salivary glands are normally destroyed. The structure of the cells and cell nuclei of most rescued salivary glands appears well-preserved, and the overall morphology of the glands is very similar to that of salivary glands before the onset of programmed cell death. In some of the rescued salivary glands, the cells appear to be more round in shape and contain large vacuole-like structures, suggesting that the cell death program has been initiated in these glands. At 26 hours APF, the number of persisting salivary glands is substantially reduced. With sustained heat-shock, an increased number of salivary glands persist at 26 hours APF.
