A heat shock promoter drives expression of upd1.
Expression of upd1hs.PM in adult females using heat shock results in frequent loss of polar follicle cells from one pole of developing egg chambers. The number of stalk follicle cells is increased, resulting in expanded and morphologically abnormal stalks that can have two or more layers of cells. The cells do not have the flattened, disc-shaped morphology of mature stalk cells. The expansion in number of stalk cells does not appear to be due to increased proliferation of the precursors. Some egg chambers fusions are also seen. Condensed chromatin morphology characteristic of stage 4 cysts is seen in many much older egg chambers and the oocyte is sometimes misplaced.
