      Hemizygous females lay no eggs. Testes from mutant males are morphologically normal but individualised spermatozoa are not detectable - spermatids degenerate. Ovaries from mutant females contain only early stage egg chambers, though the number of egg chambers is normal. Egg chambers arrest during pre-vitellogenic stages. Around 25% of mutant egg chambers have more nurse cells than is wild type, due to an extra round of cell division - only one oocyte is present in each egg chamber. An extra layer of follicle cells is present around the egg chamber. enc protein fails to localize to the oocyte.
