About half of embryos expressing lunadsRNA.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4da.G32 die prior to gastrulation with a characteristic phenotype of numerous vacuoles reminiscent of the lunar surface. Surviving embryos die at the third larval instar or early pupal stage showing black necrotic plaques. Expression of lunadsRNA.Scer\UAS under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF results in a rough eye phenotype characterised by the loss of sensory bristles. Irregular and fused ommatidia and duplicated bristles are sometimes seen. Fewer photoreceptors than normal are present and pigment cells are disorganised. Large, dark vacuoles suggestive of cell death are seen scattered between rhabdomeres and pigment cells.
