slf2L-199-7 homozygous mutant ready-to-hatch larvae are contracted and separated from the egg case by liquid, unlike controls; the head skeleton is unaffected, tracheae are air-filled and the cuticle is impermeable, similar to controls; when larvae are freed from the egg, they contract and crumple and the cuticle detaches from the body surface, unlike controls.
The presence of homozygous slf2L-199-7 mutant clones in the heads of pharate adults results in normal overall head structure, but there is rupture of the ptilinum, irregular eye and eye bristle morphology, and adults fail to eclose, dying in the pupal case, unlike controls.
Embryos derived from females carrying homozygous germ line clones do not hatch and are detached from the egg case.
