Animals expressing nabScer\UAS.cCa under the control of Scer\GAL4ey.PH usually completely lack eyes; occasionally a tiny patch of eye tissue can be seen. Animals containing a more weakly expressed nabScer\UAS.cCa transgene (expressed under the control of Scer\GAL4ey.PH) have extremely small eyes containing a few ommatidia. Animals expressing nabScer\UAS.cCa under the control of Scer\GAL4GMR.PF have glassy eyes with fused facets and an irregular surface. Loss of eye pigmentation is also seen. Animals expressing nabScer\UAS.cCa under the control of Scer\GAL4hs.2sev have a rough eye phenotype with many dark necrotic patches.
Expression of sqzScer\UAS.cAa and nabScer\UAS.cCa under the control of Scer\GAL4elav-C155 results in a significant increase in the number of SELK neurons.
