C(1;Y)6/Dp(1;f)YP223 males that are homozygous for mei(3)M201 show a high frequency of non-disjunction of the sex chromosomes (41.6%) and fourth chromosomes (47.6%). Homozygous XY males show a high frequency of non-disjunction of the sex chromosomes (39.2%) and fourth chromosomes (47.4%). Mutants also show a high frequency of nondisjunction of the 2nd and 3rd chromosomes. Analysis of the progeny of homozygous males mated to compound-X females indicates that mei(3)M201 predominantly disrupts meiosis I, although some meiosis II nondisjunctional sperm are also produced. Although homologous chromosomes are paired in the primary spermatocytes of homozygous males, sister centromeres are prematurely separated as early as prometaphase I. Homozygous females mated to wild-type males lay a large number of eggs which are morphologically normal, but only about 5% of the eggs hatch and only 51.0% of the eggs develop beyond the syncytial blastoderm stage. X chromosome nondisjunction in homozygous females is about 40.0%.
mei(3)M191, mei(3)M201 has abnormal meiotic cell cycle | male phenotype
C(1;Y)6/Dp(1;f)YP223 males that are also mei(3)M191/mei(3)M201 show a high frequency of non-disjunction of the sex chromosomes (43.8%) and fourth chromosomes (55.2%).
"mei(3)M191" and "mei(3)M201" were recovered from the same Ishigaki natural population and most probably represent two independent isolates of the same mutation.
