More than 90% of hemizygous and homozygous late third instar larvae produce melanotic masses that are seen as black spots outlining the shape of the lymph glands in pupae. Approximately 5% of homozygotes survive to adulthood.
The number of circulating hemocytes in mutant third instar larvae is increased about six times compared to wild type.
Homozygous late third larval instar lymph glands show an increase in the mitotic index compared to controls. The increase in mitotic cells is concentrated in the secondary lymph gland lobes.
Homozygous and Zfrp8M-1-1/Df(2R)SM183 mutant third instar larvae have melanotic nodules found in the lymph glands. In Zfrp8M-1-1/Df(2R)SM183 third instar larvae, some melanotic nodules are surrounded by lamellocytes and some are surrounded by prohemocytes.
Zfrp8M-1-1/Df(2R)SM183 is partially rescued by Zfrp8UASp.cMa/Scer\GAL4arm.PS
Zfrp8M-1-1/Zfrp8SM206 is partially rescued by Zfrp8UASp.cMa/Scer\GAL4arm.PS
