Contains a 750bp EcoRI fragment defining the minimal vg boundary enhancer (BE) in which the main portion (nucleotides -760 to -138) have been replaced with 5 copies of the 806bp quadrant enhancer (QE) fragment of the vg gene, each arranged in -806 to -1 orientation, resulting in the "5xQE" promoter. The remaining 137 fragment of the original BE sequence includes a Su(H)-protein binding site that is essential within the context of the intact BE for its activity in D-V border cells, but this binding site is not sufficient in the context of the 5xQE promoter to drive detectable expression within boundary cells. The 5xQE promoter is fused upstream of a minimal Hsp70 promoter driving expression of DsRed(Unk).
