Approximately 80% of homozygous larvae and pupae show constitutive melanisation. The melanisation occurs mostly in the tracheae and spiracles, with rare melanotic tumours being seen in the hemocoel.
Homozygous larvae show a stronger melanisation reaction compared to control larvae after injury with a sharp needle, which is visible 2 hours after pricking. The melanisation reaction is localised exclusively to the wound site. Heterozygous larvae also show a stronger melanisation intensity at the wound site after injury compared to wild-type larvae.
