        Mutant pharate adults show abnormal abdominal development with absence of posterior tergites and external genitalia. In many cases the abdomen has a "deflated balloon" appearance.

        Mutant escapers often lack vigour and frequently die within a few days of eclosing. Wing vein L5 fails to extend to the wing margin. The humeral bristles are often bent in mutant adult escapers.
