Mutants show defects in glial cell migration in the embryo. Ecol\lacZGli-J29-expressing peripheral glial cells born in the central nervous system (CNS) fail to leave the CNS/peripheral nervous system (PNS) transition zone, and the peripherally derived Ecol\lacZGli-J29-expressing peripheral glial cell fails to migrate towards the CNS. In the mutant embryos, the majority of the Ecol\lacZGli-J29-expressing glial cell body is found close to the CNS/PNS transition zone. The glial cell processes do not wrap the nerves, and instead only thin glial processes project along the nerves, often up to wild-type positions. The morphology of the oenocytes is also affected.
