Imprecise excision of the progenitor insertion resulting in a 778 bp genomic deletion removing the start codon and the first 371 nt into the coding region of Iap2. The resultant protein lacks lacks the entire first exon.

      Iap27a animals are highly susceptible to infection by gram-negative bacteria. Flies die within 25 hours of septic injury, and almost identical susceptibility is observed for Iap27c homozygous or Iap27c/Iap27a transheterozygous mutant animals.
