Expression of Gr59cScer\UAS.cWa in the ab1C neruon, under the control of Scer\GAL4Gr21a.9.323 and Scer\GAL4Gr63a.PF confers responses to lobeline, denatonium, and escin, but not to caffeine, theophylline, or sucrose, which do not activate I-a bitter neurons.

Expression of Gr59cScer\UAS.cWa under the control of Scer\GAL4Gr66a.1.8 does not increase the electrophysiological response of bitter-responsive classes of labellar sensilla to azadirachtin or caffeine, but decreases the response in many cases.

Expression of Gr59cScer\UAS.cWa under the control of Scer\GAL4Gr66a.1.8 confers strong electrophysiological responses to each of the bitter compounds BER, DEN and LOB in the I[[8]], I[[9]] and I[[10]] labellar sensilla (these sensilla do not normally respond to these compounds).

Expression of Gr59cScer\UAS.cWa under the control of Scer\GAL4Gr66a.1.8 increases the electrophysiological response of the I[[5]], S[[5]] and S[[6]] labellar sensilla to each of the bitter compounds BER, DEN and LOB compared to the response seen in wild-type controls.
