    Description

Insertion in desat1, upstream of the coding sequence. The element is inserted such that overexpression from the element using a Scer\GAL4 driver will result in transcription in the same orientation as the orientation of desat1 transcription.

The total amount of cuticular hydrocarbons is the same in homozygous and control males. The homozygous males show a significant decrease in the relative proportion of desaturated cuticular hydrocarbons and a significant increase in the relative proportion of linear cuticular hydrocarbons compared to control males.

Males expressing desat1EpD1 under the control of Scer\GAL4desat1-1573-1 in a desat11573-1/+ background show an increase in the total amount of cuticular hydrocarbons compared to control males. The mutant males show a significant increase in the relative proportion of linear cuticular hydrocarbons compared to control males.

Males expressing desat1EpD1 under the control of Scer\GAL4desat1-1573-C'1 in a desat11573-C'1/+ background show an increase in the total amount of cuticular hydrocarbons compared to control males. The mutant males show a significant decrease in the relative proportion of methyl branched cuticular hydrocarbons and a significant increase in the relative proportion of linear cuticular hydrocarbons compared to control males.

The total amount of cuticular hydrocarbons is the same in homozygous and control females. The homozygous females show a significant increase in the relative proportion of linear cuticular hydrocarbons compared to control females.

The total amount of cuticular hydrocarbons is the same in females expressing desat1EpD1 under the control of Scer\GAL4desat1-1573-1 in a desat11573-1/+ background and in control females. The mutant females show a significant decrease in the relative proportions of both desaturated and methyl branched cuticular hydrocarbons and a significant increase in the relative proportion of linear cuticular hydrocarbons compared to control females.

Females expressing desat1EpD1 under the control of Scer\GAL4desat1-1573-C'1 in a desat11573-C'1/+ background show an increase in the total amount of cuticular hydrocarbons compared to control females. The mutant females show a significant decrease in the relative proportions of both desaturated and methyl branched cuticular hydrocarbons and a significant increase in the relative proportion of linear cuticular hydrocarbons compared to control females.

Males expressing desat1EpD1 under the control of Scer\GAL4desat1-1573-C'1 in a desat11573-C'1/+ background show a slightly reduced ability to discriminate between male and female control flies in a courtship assay.
