RNaseMRP:RNAEY08633 homozygous mutants exhibit a significant defect in growth compared to control strains, beginning 3 days after egg deposition. At 5 days after egg deposition the mean cross-sectional area of homozygous RNaseMRP:RNAEY08633 is approximately one-third that of controls. Homozygous RNaseMRP:RNAEY08633 mutants are also delayed in development, undergoing the first moult approximately 1 day later than normal.
Despite the defects in growth and delayed development, RNaseMRP:RNAEY08633 mutants show no gross physical deformities.
Homozygous RNaseMRP:RNAEY08633 mutants show a bimodal pattern of mortality, with approximately 70% of individuals dying between 5 and 6 days of age while the remaining individuals linger as second instar larvae for up to 17 days after egg deposition, which is several days after normal individuals have reached adulthood. Mouth hooks examined after death have two to four teeth, characteristic of the second instar stage.
RNaseMRP:RNAEY08633 mutants show impaired rRNA processing.
RNaseMRP:RNAEY08633 is rescued by RNaseMRP:RNA+t0.755
