The pLUC coding sequence is placed downstream of a herpes simplex virus thymidine kinase minimal promoter and 8 direct repeats of a foxo enhancer sequence, referred to by the authors as a foxo response element (FRE).

      Ppyr\LUCfoxo.FRE larvae subjected to amino acid starvation at 24 hours after hatching and 48 hours after hatching display 50% survival at approximately 6 and 7 days after hatching. During amino acid starvation, luciferase activity increases dramatically.

      Ppyr\LUCfoxo.FRE larvae fed for 24 hours and then transferred to starvation medium for 2 days before being returned to food, arrest development and growth for those 2 days before returning to growth.
