Homozygous first instar larvae move actively in the egg case. The distribution of mitochondria appears normal in stage 17 mutant embryos and mitochondrial morphology is normal in mutant first instar larvae. Cuticle ultrastructure appears normal in mid-stage 17 mutant larvae. However, the cuticle of mutant first instar larvae is severely disorganised.
