perVT1.2 contains the following sequence variations in the 3'UTR relative to the perVT1.1 haplotype: a 15bp deletion in an exon (DEL1 polymorphism), an insertion of 3 C nucleotides in intron 8 (DEL2) and four single nucleotide polymorphisms termed SNP1 (T to C in perVT1.2), SNP2 (T to A in perVT1.2, located in intron 8), SNP3 (G to A in perVT1.2) and SNP4 (A to G in perVT1.2).
Under 12 hour light : 12 hour dark conditions, both perVT1.1 and perVT1.2 flies show the normal trend towards longer mid-day siesta and later evening activity as daily ambient temperature increases. However, in perVT1.1 flies, the onset of evening activity is advanced and the mid-day siesta is shorter compared to perVT1.2 flies. Differences in mid-day siesta and the timing of evening activity are most readily observed at 18[o]C. No significant differences in free-running behavioural rhythms have been observed between perVT1.1 and perVT1.2 flies at either 18 or 29[o]C.
One of two major haplotypes (perVT1.1 and perVT1.2) of the per 3'UTR identified in an analysis of 10 populations along a latitudinal clone in the eastern United States that stretches from Florida to Vermont.
