A subset of germline cysts containing hazelnut30.1 mutant clones are made up of only 8 germ cells, rather than the 16 cells seen in wild type. Mutant oocytes have only three ring canals, indicating that the cysts had only undergone three divisions rather than the usual four. The oocyte is correctly positioned at the posterior of the egg chamber. The hazelnut30.1 mutant egg chambers that correctly undergo four divisions arrest oogenesis early and exhibit centrosome polarity defects.
