Flies expressing Scer\GAL4Appl.G1a>Odc1Scer\UAS.cGa are effectively protected from age-induced memory impairment (AMI) that characterises wild-type flies in both olfactory short-term and intermediate-term memory performance assays. Scer\GAL4Appl.G1a>Odc1Scer\UAS.cGa flies show almost identical test scores to aged flies in which AMI is suppressed by spermidine-feeding.
Expression of Odc1Scer\UAS.cGa in mushroom body Kenyon cells using Scer\GAL4ey-OK107 has no effect on intermediate-term (ITM) and olfactory short-term memory (STM) scores compared to aged-matched controls (3 days of age). At 30 days of age, however, Scer\GAL4ey-OK107>Odc1Scer\UAS.cGa flies exhibit considerably higher STM and ITM scores when compared with aged-matched genetic controls.
