Dark-reared heterozygous ninaER11 flies exhibit a statistically significant progressive loss of the deep pseudopupil, with only about 10% of flies showing no loss of deep pseudopupil by day 5 post eclosion. Flies aged for 3 weeks in complete darkness do not show any readily identifiable hallmarks of degeneration and display a full complement of 7 rhabdomeres per ommatidium and a regular ommatidial array. There are minimal changes in photoreceptor cell structure and rhabdomere morphology in flies aged up to 30 days.
