The hid open reading frame has been inserted into a founder azot knockout line (azot^KO), resulting in expression of hid under the control of azot regulatory sequences. A single loxP site is present downstream of the hid open reading frame.

In contrast to flies containing an azot knock-out allele alone (azot^KO), the wings of flies lacking azot but expressing hid under the endogenous azot promoter (represented by the alleles hid^azot and azot^KO.hid) do not exhibit any defects, either with or without exposure to radiation. The lifespan of these flies is also increased compared to azot^KO flies.
