Expression of Nup160dsRNA.UAS.cUa under the control of Scer\GAL4Ugt36A1.PK leads to a progressive decrease in the number of nephrocytes during development (from second instar to third instar larvae), and adults lack nephrocytes entirely. The larval nephrocytes are functionally impaired, as there is significantly lower RFP/Dextran uptake from hemolymph and significantly lower AgNO[[3]] sequestration by cardiac nephrocytes, as compared to controls; the larval nephrocytes also have reduced nuclear volume, as well as nuclear pore complex and nuclear lamin abnormalities.
