P{lacW}50C.x7 array is lost by recombination or transposase activity. Recombination of P{lacW}50C.x7 from the original T(2;3)X2-7 chromosome onto a normal-sequence chromosome is accompanied by reversion of the enhanced w variegation. This confirms the correlation between enhancement and chromosomal rearrangement. Enhancement of P{lacW}50C.x7 variegation also occurs when in trans to the rearrangement, this suggests transvection is not the cause of the enhancement. Increased proximity of the array to heterochromatin in either cis or trans can increase the strength of transgene silencing.
