Definition A mononucleate cell of the embryo that determines the properties of a myofiber. It arises by asymmetric division of a muscle progenitor and does not proliferate further. There is one founder cell for each embryonic/larval somatic or visceral muscle. At the beginning of the fusion process, it fuses with one fusion competent cell.
