Description
Description
Myosin light chains (MLC) bind myosin heavy chains via an IQ motif in the neck region. They are involved in myosin motor-based movement along actin filaments, regulating ATP hydrolysis or providing a structural function. The calmodulins included in this group have been shown to act as MLCs. (Adapted from FBrf0134714).
Notes on Group

Myosin Light Chains and Calmodulins are evolutionarily related. Drosophila has a single calmodulin (Cam) gene and a testis-specific calmodulin-like gene (Acam). The calmodulin genes are grouped with the myosin light chains as they can act as myosin light chains. (FBrf0193169, FBrf0219818).

CG17237, identified as a putative myosin light chain in FBrf0134714, has been omitted from this group based on advice from K. Beckingham, Rice, Texas USA, as there is no direct molecular work showing a role as a light chain. However, it does share significant sequence homology with Mlc-c.
