In metazoans, it is difficult to functionally separate the HOPS and CORVET complexes, but a clearer picture is emerging (see FBrf0187837, FBrf0212933, FBrf0224660 and PMID:25273556).
The core HOPS/CORVET subunits are VSP11, VSP16, VPS18 and VPS33. In metazoans, the yeast VPS33 and VPS16 subunits have two homologs (in D.mel these are car and Vps33B, Vps16A and Vps16B, respectively. These may be complex-specific (FBrf0224660 FBrf0187837 and PMID:25486452).
In D.mel, a putative HOPS complex has been identified. FBrf0224660 demonstrate common role of subunit genes in the fusion of autophagosomes with lysosomes.
No metazoan ortholog for the yeast VPS3 CORVET subunit has been identified (FBrf0223135). Work in C.elegans supports the existence of these the two complexes metazoans (PMID:25273556).
