The degenerin (DEG)/epithial Na+ channel (ENaC) gene family, known as the pickpocket genes in Drosophila, encodes subunits of non-voltage gated, amiloride-sensitive cation channels. Channels may be formed by homo- or heteromeric arrangements of subunits. Each subunit has two transmembrane domains and a large cysteine-rich extracellular loop domain. They are functionally diverse, with roles in fluid and salt absorbance, mechanosensation and chemosensation. (Adapted from FBrf0220901 and FBrf0159284).
