Description
Description
The sperm-specific dynein intermediate chains (Sdic) are encoded as a multigene family. Present only in Drosophila melanogaster, the Sdic cluster was recently evolutionary derived from the cytoplasmic dynein intermediate chain gene sw. The protein encoded by Sdic genes lacks the N-terminal region of sw, a region that contains a coiled-coil domain and a serine-rich domain which are essential for cytoplasmic dynein intermediate chain function. (Adapted from FBrf0195004).
Notes on Group

Whether all the Sdic genes are transcribed and translated into functional proteins is unclear and the cluster may encode additional Sdic genes (FBrf0195004, FBrf0217456).

FBrf0234399 provides a new analysis of the Sdic gene cluster. The authors report that gene number and arrangement differs between the Release 6 (FBrf0227324) and the Berlin assemblies (FBrf0228696) and that the latter model, which lacks CG46276, is a more accurate representation of this region.
