In the late endosome/lysosome, Niemann-Pick (NPC)-type cholesterol transporters are a two-component transport system comprising an aqueous Niemann-Pick C2 (NPC2) and an NPC1 integral membrane protein. NPC2 binds unesterified cholesterol in the late endosome/lysosome lumen that has been released from low-density lipoprotein and transfers it to NPC1 for export across or into the membrane (PMID:29577985). In Drosophila, Npc2a and Npc2b have functions similar to vertebrate NPC2 (FBrf0218672 and FBrf0201424).
In Drosophila, Npc1a is involved in intracellular sterol trafficking and Npc1b in midgut sterol absorption (FBrf0193836).
