Unlike in mammals, tryptophan catabolism (NAD(+) de novo pathway) does not appear to be a source for NAD(+) synthesis as there are no homologs in D. melanogaster for 3-hydroxyanthranilate 3,4-dioxygenase (HAAO) and nicotinate-nucleotide pyrophosphorylase (QPRT) that produce nicotinate β-D-ribonucleotide (NaMN) from 3-hydroxyanthranilate. Also, Dmel cannot convert nicotinamide (Nam) into β-nicotinamide D-ribonucleotide (NMN) as it lacks nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT) activity.
