Description
Description
L-methionine is an essential amino acid required for the synthesis of proteins, L-cysteine, and the methyl group donor S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM or AdoMet). The L-methionine salvage pathway, also known as the 5'-methylthioadenosine (MTA) cycle, occurs in the cytosol and is used to regenerate L-methionine from MTA, a by-product of the polyamine biosynthesis. In addition, the first reaction in the pathway produces adenine which can be used for purine nucleotide biosynthesis. (Adapted from PMID:31460700 and PMID:19946895.)
Notes

In D. melanogaster, the transaminase that converts 4-methylsulfanyl- 2-oxobutanoate to L-methionine has not yet been identified. CG31115 is a paralog of Mtap and is specifically expressed in testis. As there is no functional information, CG31115 is not included in the gene list.
