The pipecolate pathway is an alternative catabolic route that begins with the α-deamination of L-lysine and proceeds via the intermediate metabolite L-pipecolate to produce acetyl-CoA. It is not clear if this pathway occurs in D. melanogaster as there are no orthologs for some of the enzymes known to be involved in this route. The enzyme catalysing the conversion of (S)-3-hydroxybutanoyl-CoA into acetoacetyl-CoA is not known in D. melanogaster.
