There are two types of pigments in D. melanogaster: (i) cuticular pigments, which give the cuticle its color variations - these include N-β-alanyldopamine (NBAD) and N-acetyldopamine (NADA) derivatives and melanin that are synthesized from dopamine or L-DOPA; and (ii) eye pigments, which include ommochromes that are synthesized from L-tryptophan and contribute to brown eye color, and drosopterins that are synthesized from GTP and contribute to red/yellow eye color.
