Overview

The human NTS gene encodes the precursor for two peptides, neurotensin (NT) and neuromedin N. Work done in mice implicates neurotensin in regulation of fat absorption. In order to expand upon findings in mice, the human Hsap\NTS gene has been introduced into flies. Although a gene ortholgous to NTS has not been identified in flies, there is evidence that the human NT peptide interacts with the Drosophila G-protein coupled receptor PK1-R.

After targeted expression of NTS in Drosophila midgut enteroendocrine cells, mature NT peptide was detected in the larval gut. Increased lipid accumulation was observed in the midgut of both larvae and adults, and in fat body and oenocytes of third instar larvae. Based on additional experiments, it is postulated that the effects of NT on lipid absorption are mediated, in part, through regulation of AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase; see Dmel\AMPKα).

Disease Summary Information
Parent Disease Summary: obesity, susceptibility to (fly models overview)
Symptoms and phenotype

Obesity is an abnormal accumulation of body fat, usually 20% or more over an individual's ideal body weight. Obesity is associated with increased risk of illness, disability, and death. (http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/obesity).

The development of obesity is recognized as having both genetic and environmental components (https://www.sciencelearn.org.nz/resources/203-obesity-genetic-or-environmental).

Molecular information

The NTS gene encodes the precursor for two peptides, neurotensin and neuromedin N. Neurotensin (NT) is a brain and gastrointestinal peptide that acts on several subtypes of neurotensin receptor (NTSR1, NTSR2, NTSR3). [Gene Cards, NTS; 2021.03.21]
