Subject: Re: helping FlyBase Dear Rachel, I have gone back to the records of my diploma student Roland Rutschmann who has isolated nearly ten years ago genomic clones encoding four prd-type homeodomains. One of them was mapped to 57B5,6. Although we have isolated a cognate cDNA, it appears that it was never sequenced. Since the genomic sequence encoding the homeodomain seems to be interrupted by an intron after amino acid 44 or, more likely, after amino acid 37,we have only a partial homeodomain sequence of this gene, which we called PPH17 at the time. This sequence is different from both 57San and orthopedia/W26: KKKHRRNRTTFTTYQLHELERAFRKSHYPDVYSREELAMK(VNLPRGS). I seem to remember that I have compared our sequence a long time ago with a homeodomain sequence of a gene that was isolated by Bill McGinnis and that also mapped to 57B5,6. If I remember correctly, his sequence turned out to be identical with our sequence. Perhaps he knows more about this gene. Also Uwe Walldorf had a homeodomain gene in this region whose sequence was however different from ours. With best regards, Markus
