Subject: Help FlyBase - larval touch insensitive lines
Hi Dr. Kernan,
I am curating this paper of yours for FlyBase:
FBrf0073546 == Kernan et al., 1994, Neuron 12(6): 1195--1206
in which you list many larval touch insensitive lines in Table 1 (page
1198).
Some of these you have assigned to complementation groups. My question is
about the others. Have you assigned any of the remaining lines (e.g. 375,
70, 376 ...) to known complementation groups yet?
If so, could you please provide me with the relevant gene symbols.
If not, then we shall have to give these an arbitrary gene symbol, eg lbh1,
lbh2 etc, (for larval behaviour gene 1, 2 etc) so I can capture data
concerning the larval, adult and mosaic phenotypes.
Many thanks for your help,
Eleanor Whitfield

Re: larval touch insensitives
Hello Eleanor
Sorry for the delay in replying to your inquiry - I have
been away for 3 weeks teaching a summer course and am only
now catching up on email. To answer your question about the
lines mentioned in our Neuron paper - no more information,
complementation or otherwise, is available than is presented
in that table. (We have been concentrating on the unc and
uncl -type mutations, for which we can define an
electrophysiological phenotype.) If you wish to assign
symbols to the lines (remembering that these are
mutagenized chromosomes, rather than identified loci), how
about til(touch-insensitive-larva)E, F, G...., for
consistency with those that we have already named? tilA, by
the way, has been lost.
I appreciate all your efforts in curating the database -
keep up the good work....

Hi Maurice,
>If you wish to assign symbols to the lines, how about
>til(touch-insensitive-larva)E, F, G...., for consistency with those that we
>have already named?
that is fine, so this is the designation I shall be giving each line:
line 375	tilE
line 70 tilF
line 376	tilG
line 75 tilH
line 411	tilI
line 366	tilJ
line 147	tilK
line 350	tilL
line 310	tilM
line 301	tilN
line 317	tilO
line 78 tilP
each shall have an allele number 1 so the larval, adult and mosaic
phenotypes can be captured.

Thank you very much.
I shall curate this correspondance as a personal communication from you.
Look forward to hearing from you soon,
Eleanor Whitfield
