Subject: submission to Flybase We would like to submit a novel gene identification to Flybase. The gene has been named shar pei, and encodes a guanine nucleotide exchange factor for the Rho1 GTPase. The gene has been mapped cytologically to 53F. This gene was reported at the 1997 annual Drosophila Research Conference in abstract 12C. Please reply if more information is required. Sincerely, Jeffrey Settleman Kathy Barrett Subject: Re: submission to Flybase Our Ref: rd2853 Hi Jeffrey and Kathy, we like to keep a note of the meaning of gene symbols in FlyBase, where we can. Could you let me know what 'shar pei' means, and I'll make sure an explanation is included in our files. Many thanks, Rachel. Subject: Re: submission to Flybase Rachel, Thanks for handling our gene submission. The name 'shar pei' is the name of a breed of dog characterized by numerous skin folds, and reflects the inappropriate lateral folds of embryos lacking shar pei (generated as germline clones). Jeff Settleman Subject: Re: submission to Flybase Rachel, We've been abbreviating it 'shar' since most of the obvious 3-letter names are being used already. Thanks, Jeff
