Dear Kaan,
I am writing in connection with your abstract for the upcoming Washington
DC ADRC:
'Genetic dissection of POU-domain function: Characterization of second site
modifiers of Ventral veinless/Drifter'.
You describe En(vvl) (allele En(vvl)5), a gene new to FlyBase. Do you
have a cytological location for En(vvl)? It is nice if we can keep as many
gene records anchored to the map as possible.
Thank you for your help,
with best wishes,
Rachel.
Subject: Re: ADRC: 447C
Hi Rachel,
In the abstract, I talked about mutants En(vvl)5 and En(vvl)21 which are
allelic to one another. Turns out En(vvl)5 and En(vvl)21 are alleles of Mad
(Mothers against dpp). So, for at least now, this is the only information I
can confidently give you about these mutants.
Please contact me if you have any additional questions.
Kaan

Hi Kaan,
Many thanks for getting back to me.
You abstract only discusses En(vvl)5 by name. But I will curate your
message about En(vvl)5 and En(vvl)21 as a personal communication to FlyBase
from you, to capture their allelism with Mad.
Unfortunately there is already a Mad5... What would you like the symbols
of these two new Mad alleles to be? You could go with MadE5 and
MadE21, how about that? The fact that they enhance vvl alleles will be
captured in the information about the mutants, and we need not try to
encode that in the symbol.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Rachel.

Sounds great to me. As long as we don't confuse people with the symbols,
they won't be Mad at us (I love this gene, there is no end to puns with the
name! Makes great talk titles, too.). I like your idea for the symbols, it
should work great. Thanks for the message.
