Subject: ADRC: 372A Dear David, I am writing in connection with your abstract for the upcoming Washington DC ADRC: 'Serine protease/serpin balance regulates expression of the antifungal peptide gene drosomycin in Drosophila.' You describe three genes 'Ser1', 'Ser2' and 'Ser3', all new to FlyBase. Do you have a cytological location for these that has been determined independently of nec (such as by chromosome in situ hybridisation)? Is there a one to one correspondence between any one of the Ser genes and nec? Thank you for your help, with best wishes, Rachel. Subject: Re: ADRC: 372A The ser cluster maps at 43A1.2 by in situ hybridisation. There is some evidence for Genetic complexity (Heitler et al 1993) but P element rescue indicates that Ser3 is necrotic. Deletion of Ser2 alone gives no detectable phenotype, while overlapping deletions of all 3 Serpins survives as an adult for a short while before dying with an extreme necrotic phenotype. David Gubb
