Subject: EDRC99 - abstract ID298 Dear Dr. Fasulo, We are currently curating the abstracts for the upcoming European Drosophila Research Conference in Zurich, for FlyBase. I am writing in connection with your abstract: 'doppio fuso (duo), a gene required for spindle pole assembly during Drosophila male meiosis' You mention a gene that is new to FlyBase, duo. Do you have a map location for duo? It is nice if we can keep as many gene records as possible anchored to the map. Also, you state that the P-element causing the duo mutation 'lies in the 5' untranslated region of a gene that encodes a poly-A-binding protein'. FlyBase has a record of 3 genes encoding a poly-A-binding protein. These are 'pAbp' (at 55B), 'Rox2' (also known as 'polyA-binding protein II', at 44B), 'Rox8' (at 95D). Is the duo mutation in one of these 3 genes, or is it in a new poly-A-binding protein ? Thank you for your help, with best wishes, Chihiro \---------------------------------------------------------------------- Chihiro Yamada. FlyBase (Cambridge), \---------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Dr. Yamada, thanks for giving me the possibility to clarify my assertions: \- duo is the mutant's name. It describes the cytological phenotype of a polyA-binding protein allele. \- by in situ ibridization we have positioned the P insertion at 55B. Thank you, with best wishes, Barbara Barbara Fasulo Dipartimento di Genetica e Biologia Molecolare Universita' di Roma 'La Sapienza' Ple Aldo Moro 5 Roma 00185 ITALY
