Subject: Helping FlyBase: ADRC-38 Dear Bill, We are currently curating the abstracts for the upcoming 41st (Pittsburgh) Annual Drosophila Research Conference, for FlyBase. I am writing in connection with your abstract: 'A role for the Drosophila tubby-like protein (Dtulp) in olfactory sensory transduction.' You mention a gene that is new to FlyBase, tulp. Do you have a map location for your gene? This is a data class we like to track, if possible. We already have a record for a gene that is a homolog of the mouse tubby gene, do you think it is the same gene as yours or is it something different? \*a king-tubby \*z FBgn0015721 \*e king tubby \*i ESTS:87D3S \*c 57B--C \*c Left limit from in situ hybridisation (FBrf0071734) \*c Right limit from in situ hybridisation (FBrf0071734) \*g Z50688; dbSTS:24647 \*j species == Homo sapiens; gene == TUB; GDB:4204602 ; OMIM:601197 \*j species == Mus; gene == tub; MGI:98868 \*r This gene was first recognised by a match of an \*r STS sequence from a European Drosophila Genome Mapping Project cosmid. \*x FBrf0071734 == EDGP Project Members, 1994-, computer file \*x FBrf0106792 == Kuhnlein and Jackle, 1999, A. Subject: Re: Helping FlyBase: ADRC-38 Hi Rachel, Yes, our D-tulp is the same as what Jackle has been calling king tubby. We used D-tulp because it conforms to the mammalian nomenclature, which was in place years before the fly gene cloning and characterization. In mammals, tubby was the founding gene, and the additional paralogs (3 in number) that exist in mice and humans have been designated tulp1, tulp2, and tulp3, because their genetic function is unknown. Tulp stands for genes that encode tubby-like proteins. The cytogenetic location of the gene is 57C1, and the 3' end of the D-tulp transcription unit is approximately 3.5 kb from the 5' end of the mago nashi transcription unit. D-tulp maps more proximal on 2R than does mago nashi. . Bill
