Subject: Zhr7F Dear Gillian, Could I please add these comments to the Zhr7F allele report. The present data is incomplete and I think somewhat misleading. In May 1995 Michael collected flies from Kenya. He gave me 11 tubes of various spp of fly direct from the wild. One of these (tube 7) contained 9 females that looked similar to mel (or sim) and a number of other spp. I made iso-female lines from each of these 9 (already fertilised) females. From the males that emerged it was apparent that one of these lines (line F) was melanogaster, the others were simulans. When males of this line were crossed to simulans females this line (7F) rescued some of the normally lethal hybrid females i.e. it behaved like Zhr. We crossed several single males to simulans S2 females. One of the males that rescued hybrid females we also crossed (the same single male) to C(1)M4. From this we were able to show that the rescue mutation maps to the X. The current FlyBase report states: "Allelism with Zhr (FBgn0004840) is inferred from mapping information. " Actually the only mapping information we have is that, like Zhr, this rescue mutation is X-linked. Thank you.
