Subject: Helping FlyBase: ADRC-60150 Dear Carole, We are currently curating the abstracts for the upcoming 48th (Philadelphia) Annual Drosophila Research Conference, for FlyBase. I am writing in connection with your abstract: DmSETDB1 is a euchromatin and chromosome 4-specific histone H3 lysine 9 methyltransferase in Drosophila melanogaster. You mention a gene symbol that is new to FlyBase, setdb1. Do you know which of the CG annotations your gene corresponds to? All the CGs have corresponding gene records in FlyBase already and we don't like to make duplicate records for what is actually the same gene unless we can't avoid it. The CG symbols become synonyms when an annotation is named with a more descriptive or functional name. Best regards, Rachel. Subject: Re: Helping FlyBase: ADRC-60150 Dear Rachel, The gene symbol I am mentioning is Dmsetdb1, which was first described as CG30426 Mis et al (2006). We know now that there is an error in Flybase and that Dmsetdb1 is a fusion between the 2 CGs CG30422 and CG30426. The splice site at the end of CG30422 is wrong and it places the stop codon of CG30422 into an intron,, making a single gene of these two CGs. We have verified this by a developmental northern blot, showing that there is no alternative transcription initiation site. There is a unique 3.9 Kb transcript all through development (Seum et al: Plos genetics, revision submitted). Other groups have also worked on this gene : Stabell et al: Hereditas 143,177 (2006) and Clough et al Development 134,157 (2007). I hope this was clear.
